VMI rallies from five down to tie, but Virginia Tech wins 9-7

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI baseball team rallied all the way back from 5-0 and 6-1 deficits Tuesday night to tie the game, but Virginia Tech used a three-run ninth inning to defeat the Keydets 9-7 in Gray-Minor Stadium.

How it happened:
The Hokies scored two each in the first and second innings and one in the third to open a 5-0 lead. VMI scored one in the third and VT plated another run in the sixth. VMI rallied all the way back with one run in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth innings. Cole Jenkins rapped an RBI double in the eighth to tie the game, but the Hokies hit three-straight home runs in the top of the ninth to take a 9-6 advantage. The Keydets scored one in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate but VT closed out the contest.


Highlights:
*Junior Ty Swaim went 3-5 with two runs scored
*Jenkins, Trey Morgan and Brett Cook each doubled and walked
*Justin Starke had a hit and an RBI
*Jack Hurley hit two home runs for Virginia Tech (15-9) and had three RBI


Next Time:
VMI (14-12) hosts UNC-Greensboro this weekend for a three-game Southern Conference series. The first game is slated for 6 p.m. Friday in Gray-Minor Stadium.
