VMI to Face SoCon Leader Samford this Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va
. – Coming off a tough loss to Chattanooga Wednesday night, the VMI basketball looks to bounce back as it faces current Southern Conference leader Samford Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Cameron Hall.
 
The league matchup is the second of three consecutive home games for the Keydets, who look to pick up their second conference victory of the season and first on its home court.

LAST TIME OUT - February 15, 2023 - Chattanooga 78, VMI 58 - Lexington, Va.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga defeated the VMI men's basketball team 78-58 Wednesday evening in a Southern Conference game from Cameron Hall. Chattanooga went ahead early and opened a 47-14 halftime lead, but the Keydets played a much better second half, outscoring the visitors 44-31.
 
Freshman Rickey Bradley, Jr. scored 20 points, 17 after intermission, and drilled four three pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Taeshaud Jackson II recorded his second career double-double with 15 points and game-high 11 rebounds, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor. He also nailed 3-of-4 from downtown.
 
About Samford (19-9, 13-2)
The Bulldogs come to town on a hot five-game winning streak after defeating fellow league leader UNCG by an 83-71 count Wednesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina. Samford's only two conference losses came late in January when the Bulldogs hit a rough patch falling to both Furman and Wofford in consecutive games Jan. 25-28. Battling for the top spot in the league against Furman back on January 25, the Bulldogs fell by a slim 91-84 score in overtime on the road.
 
Ques Glover leads Samford with 15.1 points per game followed by Logan Dye's 13.7 ppg. Jermaine Marshall leads the squad in rebounds at 6.4 per outing, and former Keydet Bubba Parham leads the team in assists with 70 on the year. A.J. Staton-McCray powers the Bulldog defense with 46 steals on the year, while Achor Achor has earned a team-best 22 blocks on the season.
 
 
LAST TIME vs. SAMFORD - January 4, 2023 - Samford 87, VMI 78 - Birmingham, Ala.
Looking to pick up a big SoCon road victory against league leader Samford on January 4, the VMI basketball team came up a little short as the host Bulldogs prevailed by an 87-78 count at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
The Keydets (5-11, 0-3) kept pace with the Bulldogs (9-7, 3-0) the entire game and pulled with one point at the 11:06 mark of the second half following a trey by Sean Conway, but VMI could not sustain momentum as Samford pulled away over the final 10 minutes of regulation to earn the win. Held scoreless in the opening half, Conway came alive in the second half to score 14 points and finished the night going 5-12 from the field including three treys.
