VMI to open 2023-24 season at Richmond

LEXINGTON, Va. – With a revamped roster and a fresh mindset heading into a new campaign, the VMI basketball team will tip off the 2023-24 season Monday night against the Spiders of the University of Richmond at 7 p.m. at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia.

VMI vs. Richmond – Series History
Monday's game marks the 131st all-time meeting between Richmond and VMI, with the Spiders leading the series by an 86-44 count dating back to 1915.
 
The Spiders claimed last season's contest by a score of 69-48 in Richmond and won the two prior games in 2016 and 2009, respectively. VMI last tasted victory over Richmond on New Years Eve in 2008 by earning a close 73-70 win at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

LAST TIME OUT - March 3, 2023 - Chattanooga 92, VMI 72 - SoCon Tournament First Round - Asheville, N.C.
Down 43-24 at the half, the VMI basketball team pulled within 13 points with seven minutes remaining in the game but could not get closer as No. 7 Chattanooga defeated No. 10 VMI Friday night by a 92-72 score at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The loss concluded the 2022-23 season for VMI.
 
The highlight for the Keydets came early in the opening half when senior Sean Conway converted his first free throw of the game to earn his 1,000th career point at VMI. By hitting the benchmark, he became the 45th Keydet in program history to attain the milestone. He ended the game with seven points, finishing a stellar VMI career with 1,006 points over the past four seasons.
 
VMI pulled within 16 with 7:58 to play to go into the third media timeout of the second half with some momentum. Chattanooga was led by former Keydet Jake Stephens, who scored 21 points on nine buckets.
 
LAST TIME vs. RICHMOND - November 7, 2022 - Richmond 69, VMI 48 - Richmond, Va.
Despite an early lead and battling hard to the end, the VMI basketball team fell by a 69-48 score to host Richmond on Nov. 7, 2022, in the season opener for both schools at the Robins Center in Richmond, Virginia.
 
VMI senior Sean Conway led the Keydets with 17 points and 13 rebounds for his seventh career double-double. Junior Devin Butler provided 10 points.
 
VMI trailed by just 10 points midway through the second half when Conway logged a three-pointer at the 10:20 mark to make the score 42-32 in favor of the Spiders. Following a Tyler Burton trey, the Spiders built their largest lead of the game at 26 points as Richmond led, 62-36, with four minutes left in regulation. Jason Nelson led the Spiders with 13 points throughout the contest, followed by 11 from Isaiah Bigelow.
