GLENDALE, Ariz
. – Looking to finish the Arizona Tip-Off tournament with a win, the VMI basketball team fell by a 78-69 score to Northern Arizona in the Desert Division Third-Place game Saturday afternoon at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

VMI (1-4) freshman guard Tyran Cook led the Keydets with a season-high 20 points on the afternoon, topping his previous best of 16 from the South Carolina game Monday night.

Sophomore guard Taeshaud Jackson II earned a season-high 14 rebounds in the effort, just two away from his career-high of 16 set at The Citadel in February.

The Keydets managed to build a six-point lead early in the opening half, but Northern Arizona (2-3) caught fire and had an 11-0 scoring run to eventually build a 38-33 lead at the half. Fueled by Trenton McLaughlin's game-high 21 points, the Lumberjacks built a 13-point lead with eight minutes to play that proved insurmountable for the Keydets. Jayden Jackon poured in 18 and Oakland Fort and Carson Basham both supplied 13 points to lead NAU to victory.

VMI freshman Koree Cotton ended up with 14 points – just three off his season high – and fellow freshman Stephen Olowoniyi contributed a season-high 12 points for the Keydets.

Despite the loss, the Keydets won the turnover battle (11-17) and had 52 points in the paint in comparison to NAU's 38. VMI also logged 36 points from the bench to the Lumberjacks' 22.
