Boone, N.C. – The VMI wrestling team competed Saturday at the 2022 Southern Conference Championship Saturday, hosted by Appalachian State University in the Holmes Convocation Center.

Sophomore Tyler Mousaw was the team's top finisher, taking fourth at 197 pounds. He started off his day with a pin of Wyatt Miller from Appalachian State in 2:12. After falling by decision in the semifinal round, Mousaw rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 7-3 win over his opponent from Davidson College. He is now 14-9 on the season with five pins.

Junior Jon Hoover also began with a victory at 174 pounds, defeating Gardner-Webb's Evan Schenk 4-3. He fell just 3-1 in the consolation semifinals to his foe from Chattanooga, while a win would have placed him in the top four.

Sophomore Blake Showers pinned Logan Spell from Presbyterian College in 2:28 at 165 pounds, his fifth pin of the season. Josh Evans defeated Chattanooga's Matthias Ervin 5-3 at 285, an opponent that had pinned Evans earlier in the season and Luke Fegley won a match at 149.

Freddy Junko fell just 3-2 at 141 pounds in the consolation bracket, and 157-pounder Seth Fillers suffered a narrow 3-2 loss in his opening round match against the third-seeded wrestler from Campbell.

The Keydets finished seventh in the eight-team field with 12 points, just 0.5 points out of sixth place.
