Keydets Fall to Lafayette in Home Opener

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for a second straight victory over visiting Lafayette College, the VMI lacrosse team fell by a 14-6 score to the Leopards Saturday afternoon at Drill Field No. 2.

The Keydets (0-1) stayed close to Lafayette (1-1) despite the Leopards taking 19 shots to VMI's six in the opening quarter. VMI got on the board first with a goal by Josh Bass before the Leopards responded with three straight goals to finish the period with a 3-1 advantage.

VMI opened the second quarter with the first goal by junior Scout Ripley off an assist from freshman Luke Rusterucci. Lafayette would go on to score five unanswered goal during the period before VMI's Michael Santos scored off an assist from Bass with 2:40 before the half. Lafayette's Kalman Kraham put one more on the board for the Leopards to give Lafayette a 9-3 lead going into the break.

"Credit to Lafayette," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "They came in, scrapped, and found a way to win the possession battle and ultimately the game. We didn't shoot the ball well enough today or come up with critical ground balls to even the possessions. I thought Jack Liselli was outstanding in the cage and a lot of our younger guys gained valuable experience playing in their first collegiate game. I look forward to getting back to work tomorrow, learning from our mistakes and preparing for a good Manhattan team."

The Keydets again started with a goal to begin the second half as Michael Santos logged an unassisted goal to cut the Lafayette lead to 9-4 at the 11:49 mark of the third quarter. Lafayette then scored three straight goals before Ripley notched his second goal of the game at the 3:38 mark to make the score 13-5 for the Leopards.

Ripley earned a hat trick with VMI's final score of the game at the 3:26 mark of the fourth quarter but the deficit proved too large to overcome as the Leopards earned the 14-6 road victory.

Kraham finished the game with a hat trick for Lafayette while Peter Lehman, Macklin Fitzpatrick and John Mathes each scored two. Five others logged one goal apiece to yield the victory. Lafayette earned 17 faceoff victories in the game to VMI's six to help win the possession battle.

After Ripley's hat trick, Santos finished the game with two goals for VMI to go with Bass's single score.

The Keydets return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. as they hit the road to face Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York.
