Keydets Strong on Day One of VMI Winter Classic

LEXINGTON, Va. – Preparing for the SoCon Indoor Championships just two weeks away, the VMI women's track and field team earned impressive marks on day one of the 2022 VMI Winter Classic held Friday at the Corps Physical Training Facility.

Freshman Gretal Shank made a final kick in the 1000m run to go from fifth place to second overall with a time of 3:05.78.

Senior Ingrid Joseph came in seventh place in the 60-meter preliminaries with a personal-best time of 7.87 seconds only to beat that time with a sixth-place mark of 7.81 seconds in the semifinals. With her placement, she qualified for Saturday's final round set for 11:40 a.m.

Teammate Nia Vaughan also set a new personal record with a time of 8.09 seconds for 18th place in the 60m semifinals.

Senior Ahliyah Williams arrived in 10th place in the 400 meter with a time of 59.13 seconds. Fellow senior Rachael Dickenson came in 11th place in the 5000m run with a time of 16:20.08.

Stephanie Jones earned an impressive distance in the weight throw with a ninth-place mark of 14.50 meters.

"Great performances for both teams as we continue to get a little better each week for the SoCon Championships.

"Our freshmen Gretal Shank continues to surprise with a final 100m kick from 5th place to finish 2nd in the 1000m in 3:05.78.

"Tomorrow the meet will start at 10 a.m. with the men's mile and men's shot put with a brief break after the women's mile to honor our senior members of our track and field family. We hope to see you cheering the loudest supporting our Keydets one more time before the championships."
