Keydets Head to JK 54 Classic Hosted by Longwood

Keydets to face three opponents in as many days

FARMVILLE, Va.
– After taking perennial power Davidson down to the wire in a close loss this past Sunday, the VMI basketball team is primed to compete at the JK 54 Classic hosted by Longwood University this weekend in Farmville, Virginia.
 
VMI will face host Longwood Friday night at 5 p.m., then take on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday night at approximately 7 p.m.  The Keydets will conclude the round-robin tournament Sunday afternoon with an approximate 3:30 p.m. tipoff against Fairleigh Dickinson.

VMI opens the tournament Friday against the host school Longwood. The two teams have recent history, as the Keydets defeated the Lancers 84-73 in the 2020 season to boost their all-time record to 10-3. Current Keydet Sean Conway had 19 points, five rebounds and three steals in the victory.
Longwood - 1-2 on the year - is led by Isaiah Wilkins' 13.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He also has drilled five three-pointers. Leslie Nkereuwem is just behind Wilkins with 10.7 points per outing and 6.3 rebounds.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dropped a 105-80 decision Tuesday at Missouri to fall to 1-2. The Cougars opened the season with an 85-57 win over Harris-Stowe. SIUE has a balanced scoring attack, with six players averaging nine points or more. Damarco Minor has scored 12.7 points in three starts with a team-high 12 assists. Ray-Sean Taylor averages 12.3 points a game and DeeJuan Pruitt averages 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.

The Knights are 2-1 after a 77-74 victory over Manhattan on Sunday. FDU's only loss came in overtime in the season-opener at Loyola Chicago, 88-82. Demetre Roberts is averaging 19.7 points and 4.0 assists a game thus far while Grant Singleton and Heru Bligen each have scored 15 points per outing. Bligen leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game and Singleton is tops for assists (4.3) and steals (4.0).
