Second-Half Rally Comes up just Short in Loss to Davidson

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Down 38-24 at the half, the VMI basketball team used a furious second-half rally and trailed by just one point in the final minute of the game as host Davidson escaped with a 75-71 win over the Keydets Sunday afternoon at John M. Belk Arena in Davidson, North Carolina.

VMI (1-2, 0-0) gradually cut into the deficit throughout the second half, coming within eight points at the 8:03 mark when junior DJ Nussbaum converted a bucket in the paint to make the score 59-53 going into the third media timeout of the half. Freshman guard Tony Felder, Jr. cut the deficit to three, 63-60, with 5:40 remaining after he knocked down two of three free throws after he was fouled shooting from beyond the arc.

The Final Minute
*With VMI down 71-68, Felder grabbed a steal with 18 seconds on the clock and VMI called a timeout with 11 seconds remaining. He was immediately fouled and hit both free throws to put the Keydets within one at 71-70 with seven seconds left.
*Davidson then put in two free throws to go up, 73-70, with six seconds left
*The teams played the foul game the rest of the way and Davidson put in two more free throws for the final score; Felder later hit one and intentionally missed his final attempt for VMI's final point tally

VMI head basketball coach Andrew Wilson
"We had our chances to win at the end at one of the historically best college basketball programs in the country. It was a one-possession game at the very end. I was very proud of my guys. There were three or four guys that wanted the ball at the end, and that's the kind of stuff you want to see. I feel like we have the toughest basketball team in the country and I can't wait to get back to work this week.

"I'm proud of the way that they fought and the courage they showed. Senior Sean Conway is the only one who has played in this type of environment, but the freshmen also showed up in a big way. Next time, it will be a different outcome."

Up Next
The Keydets have five days to prep for the Longwood Tournament, where they will face three opponents next weekend in Farmville, Virginia. VMI takes on host Longwood Friday night, SIU Edwardsville Saturday night and Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon.
