Scoresheet

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to start Southern Conference action with a victory, the VMI wrestling team fell to visiting Gardner-Webb, 33-6, Thursday night at Cormack Hall in Lexington, Virginia.

The Bulldogs earned an easy six points right off the bat with a victory by forfeit at 125 pounds for a quick Gardner-Webb advantage. They extended the lead with consecutive victories by major decision at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, before Corbin Dion of Gardner-Webb earned three more team points for the Bulldogs with an 8-2 decision over VMI's Luke Hart at 149 pounds.

At 157 pounds, VMI's Seth Fillers put the Keydets on the board with a hard-fought 9-6 decision over Gardner-Webb's Tyler Brignola. Going into the third period with a 6-5 lead, Fillers started with an escape and quickly earned a takedown to go up, 9-5, with less than a minute to grapple. Brignola earned a late escape but ran out of time as Fillers registered the bout victory.

Gardner-Webb's RJ Mosley shifted the momentum back to the Bulldogs with a 13-4 major decision over VMI's Blake Showers to put the visitors up, 21-3, with four bouts to compete.

Jon Hoover of VMI tallied VMI's second and final individual victory of the night by earning a 3-1 sudden victory in the first overtime period at the 174 weight class. Hoover and Gardner-Webb's Evan Schenk went into the extra period tied at one apiece after three periods, but Hoover found enough energy to earn a takedown and grab the win.
