Rifle Teams Show Well at Navy to Open Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Looking to start the 2021-22 season strong, the VMI rifle teams competed well at the Naval Academy Saturday morning in Annapolis, Maryland.
 
TCU earned the team title placing first with 4710 aggregate points (2328 SB, 2382 AR) followed by host Navy with 4673 points (2301 SB, 2372 AR). The VMI mixed team came in third with 4504 points (2224 SB, 2280 AR) and the VMI women's team placed fourth with 4378 points (2116 SB, 2262 AR).
 
Simon Krauthamer led the VMI mixed team in the smallbore with a 17th-place mark with 562 points and was followed by Jessica Hankin in 18th with 560 points. Stephen Garner (21st, 554) and James Doucett (22nd, 548) also scored points for the team.
 
The VMI women were led by Claire Lee in the smallbore with a 23rd-place mark of 543 points followed by Victoria Phillips in 24th with a 543. Maxine Gray-Barth and Katie Grochalski also competed and earned team points.
 
In the air rifle segment, Jessica Hankin placed 16th with 578 points and Savanah Diamond arrived in 22nd with a 569. Krauthamer (24th, 567) and Samantha Reid (25th, 566) also scored team points in the competition.
 
Gray-Barth led the VMI women in the air rifle with a 20th-place finish with 571 points and Lee arrived in 23rd with a 568. Grochalski (27th, 562) and Phillips (28th, 561) also earned points for the team.  Freshman Laini Morgan compete and placed 33rd overall with a 520.
