Lacrosse Falls to Mercer in Road Contest, 17-9

Box Score

MACON, Ga. – The VMI lacrosse team fought hard but was unable to rally in a 17-9 loss to Southern Conference opponent Mercer University Saturday afternoon at Five Star Stadium in Macon, Georgia.

The Keydets (1-9, 0-6) had the game tied 2-2 after the first period, but could not sustain momentum to keep pace with  the Bears. Josh Drake, Scout Ripley, and Michael Santos each had two goals for the game.

The Bears (5-6, 2-2 SoCon) were first on the board, but the Keydets answered with a man-up goal by Ripley off an assist by Jon Fant. An assisted goal by Drake put VMI up by one with four minutes left in the first. Mercer answered for a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period.

"We didn't play our best game today," said VMI head coach James Purpura. "We showed spurts at times but that isn't good enough to win at this level. We've got one more home game to honor our senior class and I look forward to getting back to work tomorrow."

The second period had another man-up goal for VMI's Ripley and Fant assist. However, Mercer went on to score five in the second to go into halftime with a 7-3 lead to start pulling away.

The VMI defense was tested with five saves from goalie Bill Osteen in the third period, but the Bears capitalized with six goals. Drake and Santos added goals for VMI to stage a comeback leading into the final period.

The fourth period had four goals by VMI in a rally attempt, but the Bears had built an insurmountable lead. Senior Ryan Perouty, AJ Stamos, Fant, and Santos added the VMI goals, with Osteen adding another five saves for the quarter.

Mercer had Sean Goldsmith and Taylor Dooley each finish with a hat trick for the game. Mercer goalie Colin Kelly totaled 11 saves throughout the game. Osteen finished with 11.

Both teams were nearly even in clears, with Mercer holding a slight 43-40 advantage in shot attempts.

The Keydets will return home to host Cleveland State next Saturday for Senior Day at Drill Field No. 2. The game is set for a noon start in Lexington.
