Keydets Head West to Face Portland and Seattle

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a brief one game stop at home Tuesday, VMI Basketball returns to the road flying out west for a two-game trip with the Keydets facing University of Portland Friday (10 pm ET) and Seattle University on Sunday (4 pm ET).  It will be the first time VMI has faced each program in basketball and the journey will be VMI's first trip to the west coast in over 40 years. The two games conclude a seven-game stretch of the early non-conference schedule that had the Keydets playing all but one game away from Cameron Hall. VMI will also be playing in its third time zone over a seven-day span.

LAST TIME OUT – The VMI basketball team scored 18 of the game's first 20 points and breezed to an 88-40 win Tuesday night over visiting Clarks Summit University (Pa.) in a non-conference game in Cameron Hall. The Keydets opened a 39-19 lead at halftime and outscored the visitors 49-21 in the final 20 minutes. The VMI defense forced the Defenders into shooting just 28 percent (15-54) on the evening, including just 5% (1-19) from three-point distance. VMI outrebounded CSU 50-28 and shot 50 percent (32-64) from the floor. Junior guard Kamdyn Curfman paced VMI with a game-high 16 points, hitting three three-point baskets to go with three assists and three steals. Senior center Jake Stephens posted 14 points and seven rebounds while Louis Tang had nine points and five rebounds. Tanner Mans compiled nine points and four rebounds, Honor Huff and Cooper Sisco each had eight points while Sean Conway had six points and a game-high 10 boards. Ashton West led Clarks Summit with 12 points and Kelvin Chest had nine points.
 
LAST MEETING WITH PORTLAND/SEATTLE – This will be the VMI's first meeting with both schools.

CURFMAN SETS CAREER HIGH –After matching his career-high of five 3-pointers in a game 12 times, VMI junior guard Kamydn Curfman set new career-best with six 3-pointers in VMI's 73-67 win over Central Arkansas November 25. Curfman currently leads the Keydets in scoring with 18.4 points per game and has scored in double figures in all seven games with two 20+ games including a career-high 27 points at Marist November 20.

STEPHENS 61 POINTS AWAY FROM 1,000 POINTS – With 110 points in the 2021-22 season, VMI senior center Jake Stephens now stands 61 points away from the 1,000 point career mark. Stephens is currently second on the team in average with a 13.8 average.

VMI ADDS TWO IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD - Virginia Military Institute has announced the signings of 6-8 forward Tyler Houser and 6-4 guard Chance Thacker to National Letters of Intent in the November early signing period. Houser averaged 14 points and eight rebounds last year for Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. He earned Mid-Penn Big 15 All-Star honors twice and produced a 19-point performance in Cedar Cliff's District 3 playoff upset of Cumberland Valley. Houser also played for Central PA Elite AAU club team. Thacker attends Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Georgian in the Atlanta metro area. He averaged 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists and earned First team Preseason All-State and Gwinnett All-County by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club. A 1,000-point scorer, Thacker was also a member of the First Team All-Region squad and helped his school to a single season record of 24 wins. He was a member of the Atlanta All-Stars club team and was a standout at the GHSA Live Period event averaging 16.0 points on a squad that went a perfect 4-0.
