LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI junior
Sarah Leckman won the women's shot put event to highlight opening day of the 2020 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships contested Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia.
Both the VMI men's and women's teams find themselves in sixth place after the first day. The Keydet men have registered 13 total points while the VMI women have claimed 16 points. Samford currently leads both the men's and women's team points with Day Two to be contested Sunday.
Leckman came in first place in the shot put with a distance of 14.50 meters, which was VMI's first women's individual title in the event for the indoor meet since 2016.
The VMI men's distance medley relay team of
Trent Whittaker,
Rafael Mas,
Zach Lauster and
Jahanzib Shahbaz placed second in the race with a time of 10:07.55. On the women's side, the DMR grouping of
Julianne Knoblett,
Ahliyah Williams,
Tamara Washington and
Logan Luckett came in eighth place with a time of 12:51.52.
"We competed hard," said VMI head coach
Darrin Webb. "We had 30+ seasonal bests today. But other teams also ran well. We qualified well for tomorrow's finals. We just have to go out and get the job done.
"I'm very excited for
Sarah Leckman. To win the shot put on her sixth and final throw was amazing to see. Overall, we just have to get some rest and take advantage of the areas that we qualified in for the finals along with men's pole vault, weight throw and triple jump."
Daniel Usher placed fourth in the men's shot with a distance of 14.73 meters (48'4").
Sophomore
McKenna Dunn performed well in the women's pole vault with a height of 3.55 meters (11'7-3/4").
In the men's 60 meter, sophomore
Jordin Poindexter arrived in third place in the preliminaries with a time of 6.90 seconds, which was first in his heat. He would later compete in the 200 meter and placed sixth in the prelims with a time of 21.96 seconds. He will compete in the finals for both events Sunday.
Williams placed first in the women's 400 meter preliminaries with a time of 57.27 seconds just ahead of freshman
Marissa Linkous, who placed third in 57.47 seconds. Junior
Ariana Ruffin came in sixth in the women's 400 meter with a time of 57.70 seconds.
Ruffin and sophomore
Ingrid Joseph placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the women's 200 meter in 25.33 seconds and 25.36 seconds.
