GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A goal in the 86th minute from junior Travis Borkey was not enough as the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team fell 3-1 at University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Keydets' regular season finale, which was played at UNCG Soccer Stadium, home of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer semifinal and championship games.
Borkey's goal, which was assisted by sophomore Dan Geyer, snapped a 386 minute scoreless streak for the Keydets, halting a drought dating back to the 60th minute in the Keydets' Oct. 18 game at Furman University. The tally was Borkey's second of the 2014 season and first since Sept. 20 against Howard University.
UNCG (5-11-2, 5-4-1 SoCon) got markers from three different sources as Nicholas Downs scored the lone goal of the first half while Christopher Reingen and Eric Gunnarsson struck back-to-back goals in a six minute stretch. Gunnarsson had one assist while Aaron Reifschneider dished out two helpers.
VMI (1-16-1, 0-10-0 SoCon) got seven saves in goal from junior keeper Alex Guerra in the cold, windy conditions. The Spartans split time between goalies as Davis Griffin and Stephen Moffitt played 45 minutes apiece. Griffin was not forced to make a save while Moffitt made two and surrendered a goal.
The Spartans, who locked up the three seed for the upcoming tournament, out-shot VMI 24-7, including 14 in the second half. The Keydets, who enter next week's tournament as the six seed, took five shots in the second stanza, paced by Borkey's three during the 90 minute tilt. Senior Blake McCauley was the only other Keydet with multiple shots. UNCG's Reingen led the game with six shots.
UNCG took 11 corner kicks, including eight in the second half. VMI was not afforded a corner in the game. The Keydets were called for 13 fouls, while UNCG was whistled 10 times, including nine in the second half. Two Keydets, McCauley and Geyer, were booked for yellow cards.
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as Downs struck on a breakaway after Reifschneider sent in a long ball to set up the play. That would be the only tally in the period as Guerra made three stops in the first 45 minutes.
UNCG capitalized on two goals in a six minute stretch between the 74th and 80th minute with strikes from Reingen and Gunnarsson. The former took his pass inside the box from Gunnarsson and scored from 10 yards out. Gunnarsson tacked on an insurance goal as Reifschneider once again sent in a long pass for a one-on-one from 15 yards out.
Borkey and Geyer connected as the latter sent in a slip pass to Borkey, who fired the tally from 18 yards out to snap VMI's scoreless drought.
The Keydets take their sixth-seed to Greenville, S.C. for the SoCon Men's Soccer Tournament for a meeting with the Paladins of Furman, which finished 5-4-1 in the SoCon and earned the three seed. The Nov. 8 contest will be played at 7 p.m. at Stone Soccer Stadium.
