LEXINGTON, Va. – Competing in its first action since November, the VMI men's swimming and diving team split its results at a tri-meet with Washington & Lee and Ferrum Saturday afternoon at W&L's home pool in Lexington. The Keydets dropped a 155-101 decision to the Generals, but routed first-year program Ferrum, who sent just two men's swimmers to the event, 224-2.
John Kim was VMI's (2-5) top swimmer on the day, as he claimed two victories at the tri-meet. Kim won the 100 back in 53.95, and also won the 200-yard version of the discipline in 1:56.56.
One of the other stories of the meet was John Kelly, returning to competition after a year away from the pool. Kelly won the 50 free in 22.05, with teammate Connor McMahon finishing second in 22.31. The same duo also earned podium finishes in the 100 free, with Kelly second (49.13) and McMahon third (49.32).
Drake Michalzuk also had a pair of top-three finishes, posting a second-place in the 200 free (1:50.09) and the same result in the 500 free (5:03.68). Both Kelly and Michalzuk were part of VMI's 400 free relay team, which had the afternoon's fastest official time at 3:20.31.
In addition, Matt Johnson finished second in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 10:23.92, and Kodiak Bowers had the top non-exhibition time in the 200 IM, a 2:07.48.
VMI men's swimming and diving will return to action Feb. 8, taking part in the two-day Virginia Tech Invitational in Christiansburg, Va.
