Men?s Soccer Falls to Defending Big South Champ Winthrop 5-1

LEXINGTON, Va. - Kicking off a busy weekend on Post, the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team hosted defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop University Saturday morning. Winthrop which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, knocked off VMI 5-1 at Patchin Field.

Despite the final score, it was a one-goal game at halftime. Max Hasenstab put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first 13 minutes of the game, but the Keydets answered as Aaron White extended his point-scoring streak to two games. Travis Borkey had the helper on White's goal, which was only the second goal Winthrop (7-0-1, 1-0-0 BSC) allowed in the first half this year.

Coming out of the gates in the second half, Winthrop tacked on three insurance goals from Achille Obougou, Mason Lavallet and Adriano Negri. Hasenstab capped his day with five points with two goals and one assist. Adam Brundle had a two-helper day while Sean Comer and Magnus Thorsson each had one assist.

Winthrop out-shot VMI 23 in the game, with 15 of those attempts coming in the first half. Keydet keeper Daniel Kitchen had five saves in his 90 minutes of work. Kitchen's counterpart, Guilherme Avelar, made two saves on the day.

Obougou led the game with six shots, but put only two of those attempts on goal. Hasenstab managed four shots and scored on his pair that found the frame. Borkey and White were the shot leaders for VMI (1-7-1, 1-2-0 BSC), taking two shots each. Borkey and sophomore David Harpen, in addition to White, found the goal, but Avelar stopped Borkey and Harpen.

VMI returns to action on Oct.5 when it heads to Clinton, S.C. for another Big South Conference game, this time against Presbyterian College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at PC's Edens Field at Martin Stadium.
