Men?s Soccer Falls 4-0 at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sucumbing to seven points from George Washington University's Tyler Ranalli, the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road Saturday afternoon at the Colonials' Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

Ranalli was the first Colonial since 2002 to tally seven points in a game, putting away three goals with one assist. He had a hand in each of George Washington's goals. Fahran Kahn had the Colonials' other goal. Credited with assists were Kahn, Ranalli, goalkeeper JP van der Merwe, Phillip McQuitty and Angel Valencia, who had two helpers.

VMI (0-4-1) struggled on the offensive side and was out-shot 14-4. Leading the way for the Keydets was Aaron White, who managed a pair including one on goal that van der Merwe turned aside for his only save of the game. Kyle Forché and David Harpen took one shot each.

Making the first start of his career, sophomore keeper Zach Kaplan stopped five Colonial shots, including four in the first half. Kaplan played all 90 minutes for the first time in his career after his first career action Wednesday night at James Madison.

It was a physical match, with a combined 27 fouls, including 17 by the Colonials. Three cards were issued, two to VMI and one to George Washington (3-2-0).

George Washington held the advantage on the corners, earning nine while VMI had just two, taking on in each half.

VMI returns to action Tuesday evening as the Keydets head to Huntington, W.Va. for a match with Marshall University. Like Saturday's game, Tuesday night will be another rematch from the VMI-hosted Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament last season. The Keydets and the Thundering Herd clash at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
