BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - In a closely contested dual meet, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs edged the VMI Keydets, 190-182, in CCSA men's swimming and diving action Saturday in Boiling Springs, N.C. The two schools contested a relay meet for the second straight year, an event that featured many unique races.
VMI's (1-4) results were headlined by a win, and freshman school record, in the 800 free relay as Matt Johnson, Drake Michalzuk, John Armellino and John Kim sped to a 7:15.82 time. Johnson took the race out in 1:48.15 and Kim closed in 1:48.51, which was more than enough to stretch out a race that was close early.
The Keydets were also winners in the 3X500 free relay, a rarely contested race covering 1500 total yards. Jeff Whiteman, Johnson and Michalzuk took the victory in 14:53.52.
Finally, the Keydets were credited with wins in two races late in the event in which GWU's results were exhibitioned. Kodiak Bowers, Kim, Max Groene and Dan Miller (3:57.62) won the 400 IM relay, while Christian Rowcliffe, Connor McMahon, Peyton Bailey and Joe Lincoln (3:24.43) were awarded the win in the 400 free relay.
VMI men's swimming and diving will now break for a large portion of the winter, before returning to action Jan. 25 in Lexington, where the Keydets face the Generals of Washington and Lee. The duel will be contested at the Generals' pool in Lexington and is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
