Men?s Soccer Falls 3-0 at Radford, Despite Kitchen?s Career Night

LEXINGTON, Va. - Despite a career-high 13 saves from senior goalkeeper Daniel Kitchen, the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team fell 3-0 Wednesday night at Radford University's Cupp Memorial Stadium in Big South Conference action.

The Highlanders (6-5-4, 3-2-2 BSC) got quick first half strikes from Bernardo Ulmo and Jamie Summers in the 13th and 16th minute. Radford capped the night in the 88th minute with a Grande tally, adding to his assist on the Ulmo goal. Ulmo was credited with the helper on Summers' goal while Stephen Hudgens was on the back end of Grande's marker.

Kitchen, who is the only keeper in the Big South Conference with double-digit saves in multiple games, surpassed his previous career mark of 11 stops against then No. 23 High Point University on Oct. 3, 2012. Early this season, Kitchen made 10 saves in the Keydets' league opener at Campbell University on Sept. 3.

According to Monday's national statistical rankings, Kitchen's 13 saves tie for second-most in a single game across the country this season and tie for the most in the Big South this season.

Highlander keeper Dane Wilson made two saves on the night, stopping one VMI shot on goal in each half. Radford controlled the pace of the game, ripping 31 shots, including 17 in the first half. The Highlanders earned 10 corner kicks, taking five in each stanza.

VMI (2-13-1, 2-7-0 BSC) got multiple shots from Blake McCauley and Travis Borkey, each taking one attempt. McCauley put one of his shots on from, while sophomore Kyle Forché, who had VMI's game-winner last weekend, put his lone attempt on target.

The Highlanders got out to a quick start, scoring in the 13th minute. Taking a long pass in transition, Grande fired a shot on cage from point-blank range, but Kitchen made the stop. However, Radford's Ulmo controlled the rebound and put the Highlander's up 1-0.

Radford took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute after a set piece on a VMI foul. Ulmo sent in the free kick, which was tipped home by Summers to double the Highlanders' score, an advantage Radford carried into the halftime break.

The Highlanders controlled the offensive pace in the first half, taking 17 shots while limiting VMI to just three. McCauley took VMI's lone shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, while Borkey and  Starnes took one shot each, but could not find the frame.

Kitchen, who was ranked 40th in the country in saves per game (4.75) entering the midweek tilt, had a busy first half, making six stops in the period. The Richmond, Va. native was active on corner kicks, punching the ball clear on a major of Radford's five attempts in the opening 45 minutes.

The Keydets are on the road for their next game, a non-conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. against Howard University. Game time is slated for 12:30 p.m. at the Bison's Greene Stadium.
