Late Winthrop Goal Edges Men?s Soccer 1-0

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A Winthrop University goal in the 79th minute edged out the Virginia Military Institute men's soccer team Saturday afternoon. The Keydets fell 1-0 at Eagle Field in their final Big South Conference road game of the regular season.

Sean Comer came up with his second goal of the season to lift the Eagles (8-7-1, 4-3-1 BSC) over the Keydets. Comer collected a double assist on the marker, as Brennan Thomas connected a pass to Adam Brundle, who fed Comer from six yards out.

Despite suffering the loss, VMI keeper Daniel Kitchen made 10 saves in the game against 19 Winthrop shots, 11 of which were on goal. Opposite Kitchen, Enrique Miranda stared down 10 shots, but VMI managed just three on goal.

The Eagles out-shot VMI 19-10, including 11 in the second half. The Keydets (2-12-1, 1-7-1 BSC) split their attempts, with five in the first half and five in the second. Matt Seinfeld led VMI's offensive efforts, with four shots. Blake McCauley, who had scored in each of the Keydets' previous two games, was held without a goal, but managed a pair of shots.

Corner kicks were close on the day, with Winthrop taking six attempts while VMI earned five. The Eagles were aggressive on the attack, but were called offsides nine times, including eight in the second stanza.

VMI had a chance to even the game late in the tilt, with Seinfeld taking a corner kick in the 85th minute. Nothing came of the opportunity, but VMI kept things close two minutes later as a Keydet committed a penalty, allowing Winthrop a direct kick just outside the penalty area. Thomas took the attempt, aiming for the lower right corner, but Kitchen beat the try and made the stop.

The Keydets take a break from Big South action, heading to Raleigh, N.C. on Monday to face its second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the season in North Carolina State University. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Wolfpack's Dail Soccer Field in a game to be televised on ESPN 3.
