Freshman Record Highlights Men's S&D at Virginia Tech

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – After a thrilling season opener Friday, VMI men's swimming and diving was back in action Saturday in a tri-meet hosted by Virginia Tech in Christiansburg, Va. The Keydets fell in both ends of the meet, losing to host Virginia Tech 281-33 and falling to Gardner-Webb 234-79.

VMI's action in the pool Saturday was highlighted by a program freshman record performance in the 400 medley relay, as the team of Jeremy Senn, Matt Rowe, Jared Redding and Christian Rowcliffe clocked in at 3:47.98, finishing fifth. The quartet just edged under the previous VMI freshmen mark, 3:48.00 set in 2009.

Connor McMahon was the individual standout for the Keydets on Saturday, competing in both the 50 and 100 free. In the shorter distance, he placed fifth with a time of 21.90, while the sophomore completed the 100-yard race in 48.98, good enough for sixth place. Sean Moore recorded a pair of similar results, placing fifth in the 1000 free (10:14.87) and sixth in the 500 free (5:00.38).

The Keydets swam well in the 50 back as well, with Peyton Bailey finishing sixth in 25.95 seconds. Bailey led Thom Corbett, Clarke Ruska and Senn, who finished seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Finally, the 50-yard fly saw Thomas Brown finish sixth in a time of 25.40 seconds. Redding was seventh (25.68) and Nick Sites was eighth in 26.09 seconds.

VMI men's swimming and diving will return to action Saturday, Oct. 27, facing McDaniel in a dual hosted by Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. Action will get underway at 1 p.m.
