Keydets Fall to GWU, Suffer Season's First Loss

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – James Goodwillie posted two first-place finishes and VMI set two freshman school records, but the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs defeated the VMI Keydets 152-102 in men's swimming and diving action Friday night in Boiling Springs, N.C. With the setback, VMI falls to 5-1 and suffers its first loss of the season.

Goodwillie dominated one of the events in his best discipline, winning the 200-yard backstroke going away in 1:58.84, nearly three seconds faster than the second place individual. He also was credited with the win in the 200 IM in 2:02.38.

VMI's other two individual event winners Friday were Jake Shafer and Jeff Whiteman, as the freshmen won the 200 fly and 500 free respectively. Shafer clocked in at 1:59.84 to win the fly in a VMI freshman record time, while Whiteman won the longest individual race of the night, the 500 free, in 5:01.56. Whiteman defeated a field that included Kodiak Bowers, who finished third (5:07.67) after placing second in the 200 free earlier in the evening.

The Keydets were also victorious in the 800 free relay, as Shafer and Whiteman teamed with Stephen Lloyd and Nick Mathis to post a 7:20.58 effort, VMI's second freshman school record of the night. Finally, Thomas Brown was second in the 100 fly (56.08) while Connor McMahon was edged out in the 50 free (22.86).

VMI men's swimming and diving has now concluded its fall season, and is back in action Jan. 14, taking part in a tri-meet hosted by James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
