WASHINGTON, D.C. - The VMI men's soccer team, playing a man up for nearly 55 minutes of the match, earned a 0-0 draw against the Howard Bison Weds., Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C. Senior keeper Brian Sowell earned his 10th-career shutout in the victory, making five saves, while sophomore Matt Seinfeld led the squad with six shots on the night.
VMI (2-9-2, 2-3 BSC) outshot the Bison (2-11-2, 1-2 ASC) by a 17-12 margin, including four shots in the two overtime periods. The match was physical to say the least, as there were 35 fouls called. Also, three red cards were given, two to Howard players and one to VMI's Brandon Gary, along with nine cautions with six going to Howard and three to VMI.
VMI threatened in the overtime periods, with Ayao Sossou taking a shot in the 93rd minute that was turned away by Howard's Larry Turner, who also made five stops on the day.
In the second overtime, VMI mustered a trio of chances with under seven minutes left, as Brian Harding, David Rochow, and Amir Shihata all had opportunities, but could not find the back of the net, resulting in the draw.
The Keydets will carry the three-match unbeaten streak into High Point, N.C. to take on the Panthers from Vert Stadium on Sat. Oct. 30 in the squad's next match at 7 p.m. There are a variety of ways to tune into the match, as live stats, as well as live video will be available. Additionally, the matches will be televised locally on WCWG, which serves the High Point Area.
Following Saturday's match, the Keydets close out their regular-season slate by hosting a pair of Big South contests from Patchin Field. The Liberty Flames make the short trip from Lynchburg on Tues., Nov. 2 for a 4 p.m. kick-off, while the regular-season concludes Sat., Nov. 6, as VMI takes on Presbyterian College at Noon.
