VMI Falls to East Tennessee State, 2-0

Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – VMI men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to the East Tennessee State Bucs Friday evening in Johnson City, Tenn.

The Keydets (0-2) had an early shot attempt, a John Sisco attempt that went wide, but ETSU (1-0-1) got on the board shortly thereafter. A goal at 17:44, off a header following a free kick in the box, put the home team up 1-0, a lead they would not relinquish.

For the remainder of the first half, the teams played almost entirely in the midfield, with just four total shots coming over the next 28-plus minutes. The Bucs held their 1-0 lead at halftime, and quickly began to ratchet up the pressure. ETSU attempted five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, after having just two the final 28 minutes of the first half. Fortunately for VMI, none of those shots found the back of the net, and the score remained 1-0 until the 70th minute, when ETSU's Kyle Franklin scored from 25 yards out to make it 2-0, and account for the final margin.

Thanks to a 13-2 edge in second-half shots, the home team outshot VMI 20-5 for the game. VMI keeper Brian Sowell made three saves on the night, while ETSU netminder Scott Rosman was not forced into action.

VMI men's soccer will return to action Friday, Sept. 11, as the Keydets host the Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament at Patchin Field. The four-team tournament gets underway Friday at 1 p.m., as Liberty takes on Rider at 1 p.m., with VMI battling St. Francis (N.Y.) in the late game.
