Men's Swimming & Diving Falls to Gardner-Webb in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Va.- Gardner-Webb placed first in each event held as the Bulldogs won a 286-102 decision over VMI in both teams' season opener, held at the Clark King Pool on Saturday morning, Oct. 3.  The dual was conducted as a relay meet, as each of the day's 10 events consisted of relays.

The Keydets netted a pair of second-place finishes on the day, coming in the 3x100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle relays.  In the backstroke, Matt Dale, James Goodwillie and Matt Elliott combined for a time of 2:51.98, while in the freestyle relay, Will Rowcliffe, Justin Ferrell, Elliott and Tristan Euritt touched the wall in 3:27.08.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, were led by sophomore Collin Burchins and freshman Mitchell Turner, who were part of the winning teams in each of the four relays they participated in.  Burchins helped the 3x100 butterfly, 3x100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle and 4x100 IM relay squads each capture victories, while Turner did the same in the 3x100 backstroke, 800 freestyle, 3x500 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay events.

VMI returns to the pool on Oct. 17, traveling to D.C. to take on Georgetown.  The event is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
