Radford Outlasts Keydets In OT Again, 86-83

RADFORD, Va. - Junior guard Martell McDuffy scored 19 points, including 15 after halftime to key Radford to an 86-83 win over VMI in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

The Highlanders overcame a 31-point, 14-rebound effort from VMI senior forward Reggie Williams to win their fourth game over the last five outings. VMI fell to 13-13, 5-7 in the Big South with two regular season game remaining. Radford improved to 10-17, 5-7 in the conference.

VMI missed a chance to end the game in regulation when Travis Holmes' running 18-footer grazed the front of the rim as time expired.

In a game that saw six ties and 18 lead changes, the Keydets took their final lead of the contest when Christian Hunter hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4:33 left in OT. Reggie Williams later tied the game with a 3-pointer to knot the score at 75-75 at the 3:06 mark, but McDuffy, who had hit big shots down the stretch in Radford's second half rally, canned a jumper with 2:39 left to put the Highlanders up for good. Leading 80-79, Radford hit six straight free throws over the last :31 of OT to keep distance and secure the season series sweep, both in overtime fashion. Radford downed the Keydets, 108-102 in OT February 5 at Cameron Hall.

Junior guard Chavis Holmes helped lead VMI offensively in the second half with 16 points and finished with 22 points while playing all 45 minutes. Hunter added 15 pointers including a game-high five 3-pointers. Junior forward Willie Bell contributed eight rebounds.

Radford sophomore point guard Amir Johnson also played all 45 minutes and scored 17 points while sophomore center Joey Lynch-Flohr scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

VMI took its biggest lead of the game (54-45) when Williams converted a 3-point play with 12:16 remaining that capped a 15-7 run over five minutes. The Keydet cushion was still eight points (64-56) under the five minute mark, but the Highlanders finished regulation with a 13-5 run with Lynch-Flohr scoring seven points during the stretch. McDuffy knotted the game at 69-69 with 1:18 remaining but VMI could not connect on its last three shots from the floor to avoid overtime.

VMI shot 41% for the game including 10 of 44 from long-range. The Keydets also drained 9 of 11 from the stripe with both misses coming in overtime. Radford hit 47.9% from the floor and 14-19 from the line.

The Keydets continue the road swing with a game Tuesday night at Liberty at 7:00 p.m. Radford will host High Point Wednesday night at 7:00 at the Dedmon Center.
