BOONE, N.C.- The VMI wrestling team wrapped up its Southern Conference slate on Sunday afternoon, as Appalachian State scored a 42-4 win to secure at least a tie of second place in the SoCon standings. The Keydets fell to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the SoCon, while the Mountaineers improved to 13-7 and 4-1 in the league.
The Keydets forfeited the opening match at 184, while freshman Curtis Moore moved up to 197 for the first time this season, dropping a 6-0 decision to Dylan Temple.
Freshman Josh Wine scored the Keydets lone win at heavyweight, as he improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in duals, posting a 16-4 major decision against Jared Campbell to cut the ASU lead to 9-4.
The Mountaineers went on an impressive run from there, posting extra-point wins in five of the next six matches.
At 125, ASU's Frank Celorrio and VMI's Jeremy Adams entered the second period scoreless, as Adams chose the bottom position, but was not able to escape. The two switched roles to start the third period with the score deadlocked at 0-0. With a minute remaining, Celorrio reversed and took control of the match, earning the pin at 6:35.
ASU senior Terreyl Williams drew Ryan Goodsell at 133-pounds. Williams took three takedowns to lead, 6-2, after three minutes. Williams added three more takedowns and two back points to lead 14-5 entering the third period on his way to the 15-5 major decision.
Fifth-year senior David Metzler squared off with ASU's Marcus Cox at 141. After going most of the first period scoreless, Cox earned a takedown with four seconds remaining on the clock. Entering the second, Cox started on top, holding the advantage for most of the period. A technical violation cut into Cox's advantage at 2-1. Metzler scored a takedown with 30 seconds remaining to take the 3-2 lead. Cox, holder of the riding time point then forced overtime. Thirty seconds into the extra frame, Cox scored a takedown to win the match 5-3 and give ASU the 22-4 team lead.
Twelfth-ranked Scott Ervin won by technical fall against Keydet freshman John Held at 149, 19-3, while senior Eddie Hutchinson pinned VMI freshman Andrew Dionne in 23 seconds, advancing the ASU lead to 33-4.
Senior Tommy Hutchinson followed twin brother Eddie with a pin of his own in 2:50, marking the second consecutive match that the Hutchinsons went back-to-back with pins.
In the final bout of the SoCon regular season, Neal Martin earned a takedown and escape plus two penalty points to win the match, 5-0, wrapping up the match at 42-4.
The Keydets host Liberty on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at The Thunderdome, as the team will honor its senior class prior to the match.
