SPRINGS, N.C. ? The VMI men's soccer team lost 1-0 to the
Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Sunday night, in a Big South matchup played in Boiling Springs, N.C.
VMI's shutout streak, which had extended for more than two full games,
ended early on as homestanding Gardner-Webb notched a goal just before the
25-minute mark of the opening period. Timothy Oswalt served a ball into the
box, and it was headed by Matt Niescierowicz. Off the header, Logan Swaim
gained control and shot it past VMI keeper Brian Sowell to give the Bulldogs a
1-0 lead, which would be the final margin.
Much of the game was controlled in the midfield, but Gardner-Webb
dominated the game statistically, as the Bulldogs outshot the Keydets 18-5 for
the day. The home team had seven more corner kicks, and forced Sowell to make
eight saves for the Keydets, while Bulldog keeper Dane Geraci stopped just two
shots.
Despite the return from injury of senior Barrett Luxhoj, VMI drops to
2-11 on the season and 1-4 in the Big South. Gardner-Webb moves to 6-9 and 5-2
in conference play.
VMI men's soccer will return to action on Friday, as the Keydets travel
to High Point, N.C. to take on the High Point Panthers.
Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
