Men's Soccer Can't Stop High-Flying Eagles

LEXINGTON, Va. - The men's soccer team couldn't extend its two game winning streak Saturday as they fell to Winthrop 4-0 at Patchin Field. Winthrop's Dee Vydra scored a pair of goals in the first half, and Duncan Williams scored two in the second half as the Eagles captured their seventh victory of the season.

The Keydets, who fall to 7-6-1 overall, and 1-3 in the Big South, couldn't get its offense going against the Eagles, and lost just their second game of the season at home.

Winthrop, who improved to 7-6-1, and 2-2-1 in the Big South, got two early goals from Vydra. His first came in the 11th minute as he volleyed in a ball that was deflected in front of the goal. In the 33rd minute, Vydra struck again when he headed in a free kick from teammate Michael Chumah to put the Eagles up 2-0, his fourth goal of the season.

Neither team had much success in the second half capitalizing on good scoring opportunities, going scoreless for the first 42-plus minutes of the half. The Eagles, however, got a pair of goals in the last seven minutes from Duncan Williams to put the game away for good.

The Keydets managed to fire off ten shots in the contest, but were unable to score a goal for just the second time this season.

John Sollock, who was pressured several times by the nation's 12th highest scoring team, came up with five saves in the match for the Keydets.

VMI, who has three games remaining before the Big South Tournament in High Point, N.C., look to get things back on track as they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty on Wednesday, October 26 at 3:00. Liberty, 4-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Big South, is coming off a big 3-1 win over conference-leading Radford last week.
