RADFORD, Va.- Competing against their first Northeast Conference foes of the season, the VMI Swimming & Diving team defeated Howard and fell to Georgetown Saturday afternoon at a meet hosted by Radford University.
The Keydets improved their record in dual meets to 3-2 on the season, defeating Howard by a 178-49 score while falling to Georgetown 139-95.
The Keydets won two events against Georgetown, as sophomore Stuart Craft (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) swam a 2:34.54 in the 200 yard breaststroke, while the Keydets' 200 yard freestyle relay team turned in a time of 1:41.71 to take the event. That relay team consisted of senior Justin Fallin (Midland, Texas/Robert E. Lee), senior Will Butt (Bedford, Va./Liberty), freshman Chris Beyer (Reston, Va./Flint Hill) and freshman Peter Borchelt (Evans, Ga./Evans).
Against Howard, the Keydets had nine event winners, including the two previously mentioned events. Freshman Hank Lee (Arlington, Va./Hargrave Military) claimed two of those victories with a 51.89 in the 100 yard freestyle and a 1:55.26 in the 200 yard freestyle. Senior diver Matt Dowdy (Richmond, Va./James River) also took a pair of events, with scores of 175.05 in one-meter diving and 153.15 in the three-meter event.
Craft captured the 50 yard freestyle race with a time of 23.10 seconds, while Butt's time of 11:07.41 in the 1000 yard freestyle also gave him the win. In the 500 yard freestyle event, Beyer turned in a time of 5:25.40, giving him the victory.
The Keydets return to action in two weeks, when they travel North Carolina to take on Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 29.
