CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Ben Rand scored a season-high 20 points and senior Mike Gilbert chipped in a season-high 10 points to lead VMI to a come-from behind 58-49 win over The Citadel Monday night in Charleston, S.C.
Trailing 46-43 with 5:09 left, the Keydets went on a 8-0 run over the next 2:23 to take control of the game. The spurt started with a Mike Gilbert jumper, Skipworth layup, a Levar Joseph jumper, and pair of free throws by Skipworth with 2:46 left to push the score to 51-46.
The Citadel closed within 53-49 with 1:10 left, but Joseph answered with a 3-pointer with one second left on the shot clock at the 1:10 mark to put the Keydets up, 56-49.
Skipworth finished with 11 points and Joseph added eight points for the Keydets, who won their second straight game and now stand 8-17, 3-12 in the SoCon, and pulled even with UNCG for fifth place in the SoCon North Division.
VMI ended four game losing skid to the Bulldogs and defeated them for the first time since a 74-72 overtime win in Charleston in February, 1999.
VMI shot just 35.8% from the field, but hit eight of 21 trey attempts for 36%. VMI also outrebounded the Bulldogs, 42-32.
Micheal Joseph was the lone Citadel player in double figures with 13 points. The Bulldogs fell to 8-18, 3-12.
VMI next plays Saturday at Davidson. Tipoff will be 7:00 p.m.
