Lexington, Va. - UNC Asheville senior Will Matthews scored four minutes and 52 seconds into overtime, Saturday, to hand the VMI men's soccer team a 3-2 overtime loss in a Big South Conference game at Patchin Field.
VMI (2-9-0, 0-4-0 Big South ) jumped on top early in the contest when freshman forward Mike Lloyd (Saline, Mich. / Saline) scored the only goal of the first-half six minutes into the game, making the score 1-0.
UNC Asheville (4-4-2, 2-1-0 Big South) tied the game and then took the lead during a four-minute and 20 second span early in the second-half.
Bulldogs' junior midfielder Greg Yelverton netted his first goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Jordan Holthouser. Goal number two for UNCA came from senior forward Michael Kachan with Yelverton recording the assist.
Trailing 2-1 midway through the second-half, Keydet freshman forward Charles Nweke (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cox) tied the game at two after scoring on an outstanding cross field pass from freshman midfielder Tony Williams (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson).
"We earned the opportunity to win the game," VMI head coach
Stephen Ross said. "I felt like we deserved the win, we just couldn't get one in."
The Keydets travel this Saturday to Conway, S.C. for a Big South Conference match-up against Coastal Carolina. Game time is 2 p.m.
