Lexington, Va. -- VMI freshman forward Mike Lloyd (Saline, Mich./Saline) scored two goals to lead the Keydets, Tuesday afternoon, over longtime rival Washington and Lee 3-1.
After a scoreless first-half, Lloyd got VMI (3-10) on the board at the 49:01 mark thanks to an assist from sophomore forward Parker Thurman (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox).
The Keydets went ahead 2-0 when Thurman connected on his first goal of the year form an assist by senior midfielder Ross Davis (Baton Rouge, La. / Woodlawn).
The Generals (6-2-2) cut the lead in half when W&L goals and points leader Brian Pirkle scored unassisted, making the score 2-1.
But Lloyd's second goal of the game came with under 15-minutes remaining in the second-half and proved to be an insurance score for VMI as they held on to win, 3-1.
VMI traveled about a mile-and-a-half to the campus of W&L to break their three-game winless streak against the Generals.
Prior to today, the annual contest against their Division III foe had produced a record of 4-4-2 over the last 10 years.
The Keydets are back home this Saturday to face Marshall University at Patchin Field. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
