Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The VMI swimming and diving team opened its 2003-04 campaign with a 162-33 win over Canisius and 113-81 loss to Duquesne in a double-meet on Saturday afternoon at Duquesne University.
Freshman Braden Orr (Pennington, N.J./ Hopewell Valley) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:02.45 in his first collegiate meet.
Freshman Kevin Vik (Eagle River, Alaska/ Chingiak) equaled the feat, winning the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:10.96.
Freshman Kimball Yamaski (Freemont, Calif./ Mission San Jose) in the 100-yard breaststroke competition, clocking a time of 1:04.82. He also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:03.03.
Sophomore Dane Elles (Crosby, Texas/ St. Thomas) placed second in the 50-yard freestyle event, touching the wall in 23.15 seconds.
Sophomore Dave Rahl (Kennebunk, Maine/ Kennebunk) took the silver medal in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:57.95.
Senior Ryan Beatley (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) earned a second place finish of his own in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in with a time of 1:07.93.
VMI will host its only home meet of the season on October 25 at Cocke Hall vs. Randolph-Macon. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
