VMI Swimming Defeats U. of Charleston by Forfeit; Freshmen Beat Upperclassmen in Scrimmage, 56-30

Lexington, Va. -- The VMI swimming team (5-5) ended its regular season with an 11-0 forfeit victory over the University of Charleston (W.Va.) at the Cocke Hall Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Charleston team failed to attend the meet. In lieu of the forfeit, the Keydets held an intrasquad scrimmage between the freshmen and upperclassmen. The freshmen came out victorious, 56-30.

Bart Payne (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) won three events for the freshmen. He took the gold in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.30), 100-yard butterfly (1:00.85) and 500-yard freestyle (5:27.00) events.

Fellow freshman Ken Rhee (Northridge, Calif./ John F. Kennedy) won two events. He took first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.53 and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.70 seconds.

Freshman Dane Elles (Crosby, Texas/ St. Thomas) touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.94 seconds.

Chris Eaton (River Forest, Ill./ River Forest) wrapped up the freshman victories with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.07).

The upperclassman team's lone victory came from junior Ryan Beatley (Grafton, Va./ Grafton), who won the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:11.07.

The Keydets will swim again February 13-15 at the Southern States Championships, held at Radford University's Dedmon Center Pool.
