Keydet Soccer Rallies Late; Ties Belmont 3-3 in VMI Tournament

Lexington, Va. -- The VMI soccer team (0-2-3) scored goals late in the second half, but could get no further as the Keydets tied Belmont, 3-3 in the second day of the VMI Soccer Tournament. The game was played at Patchin Field on Sunday afternoon. VMI's three ties account for the largest single-season mark that VMI team has had in the history of the program.

The Bruins (2-2-1) struck first, when freshman forward Channing Twyner scored on passes from junior forward Jose Perez and junior forward Fernando Castellanos 11:53 into the game.

Senior midfielder Jonathan Rios (Fredericksburg, Va./ Courtland) evened things up for the Keydets, scoring an unassisted goal at the 22:21 mark.

Belmont senior midfielder Jon Mareco gave his team the lead back 34:26 into the game, scoring on a penalty kick. The Bruins lengthened the lead to two, when junior midfielder Sanel Fililipovic netted the twine on a pass from Twyner at the 65:46 mark.

The Keydets got back in the game at the 72:54 mark, as junior midfielder Ross Davis (Baton Rouge, La./ Woodlawn) scored his second goal on the season with an assist from Rios. Just 3:43 later sophomore defenseman Logan Manning (Fairfax, Va./ Robinson) scored on a header with an assist from freshman forward Parker Thurman (Virginia Beach, Va./ Cox).

The teams played scoreless through the final 13:19 of regulation and two ten minute overtime periods, resulting in the 3-3 tie.

VMI junior goalkeeper Morgan Harris (Powell, Ohio/ Worthington Kilbourne) made five saves, including a couple in the overtime periods. Belmont's sophomore Matt Renfrow also made five saves in relief of injured starter Drew Smith.

"I liked our intensity and ball movement today," said VMI head coach Stephen Ross. "We just can't seem to get the finishing shot."

In the first game of the day Central Connecticut State edged The Citadel, 1-0.

The Keydets open their Southern Conference schedule on Saturday as they host Wofford at Patchin Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bruins will play host to Cumberland on Friday night at 8:00.
