VMI Soccer Battles to 3-3 tie with Central Connecticut

LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI and Central Connecticut State played to a 3-3 tie in the opening game of the VMI soccer tournament Friday afternoon at Patchin Field.

VMI twice had to rally to pull even in the game. Kyle Clark's (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) goal assisted by Logan Manning (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) at the 85:38 knotted the score at 3-3.

The Keydets and Blue Devils were unable to net a game-winner throughout two 10-minute overtime sessions.

Central Connecticut State jumped to an early 2-0 lead when Renson Hayes scored off an assist from Jorden Holder at 20:17 of the first half. Two minutes later, Holder scored on an unassisted effort at 22:40 to give the Blue Devis a two-goal cushion.

The Keydets halved the deficit at the 33:06 mark when Daniel Whitehall (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast) scored on a Ross Davis (Baton Rouge, La./Woodlawn) assist, and tied the game after intermission when Parker Thurman (Virginia Beach, Va./ Cox) took a Jon Rios (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) pass and scored on a rebound at the 67:14 mark.

The Blue Devils surged , 3-2, ahead when Holder fed Jeremy Lee for a goal at 82:37, but the Keydets responded on Clark's equalizer.


VMI outshot CCSU 17-8 for the game.

Keydet keeper Morgan Harris (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Killbourne) made seven saves while Blue Devil keeper Jeff Brunnetti posted nine saves.

“We played better as the game went on and we responded from a slow start,”said VMI head coach Stephen Ross. “ We did not panic and a couple of guys stepped it up for us. We have a lot of talent and we're working hard to bring it all together.”

VMI (0-2-2) faces Belmont Sunday at 2 p.m. while Central Connecticut (3-0-1) will face The Citadel Sunday at noon. Both games will be played at Patchin Field.
