Keydets Fall in Farmville, 4-0

FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind three penalty kick goals, all converted by Lauren Trizna, the Longwood Lancers defeated the VMI Keydets 4-0 in women's soccer action Tuesday night in Farmville, Va.

The story of the night was Trizna's three scores, as she converted one penalty try in the first half for the eventual game-winner, then did so again in both the 61st and 63rd minutes. Her final score capped a four-goal run by the Lancers (3-2) over just 21 minutes of game action, and sealed the contest.

The three PK's were not only the most VMI (0-3) had ever allowed in a single match, but were just two short of the number allowed in program history (five). In fact, the Keydets had given up just one PK goal since 2004, with that score coming last season.

The first 13 minutes of Friday's match was played mostly in the midfield, with neither side attempting a shot. Longwood registered the night's first attempt at 13:02, but VMI keeper Angela Redmond made the save. The home team went on to try seven shots over the next 20 minutes of play, but could not take the early advantage. VMI tested Lancer netminder Marcia Biddle at 38:48, but a Gabby McCarron try was turned aside to keep the contest scoreless.

With 90 seconds left in the first half, Longwood's Kayla Huggins tried a corner kick. On the play, the Keydets were whistled for a foul, leading to the match's first penalty kick try. Trizna converted for her first goal of the season, and Longwood took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

The home team added to its lead in the 50th minute. After Redmond made a pair of saves in the opening moments of the second half, Kelsey Pardue found the lower right corner of the net, putting the Lancers up 2-0.

The Keydets got back in the shot column in the 56th minute, but Biddle stopped Sarah Strand to preserve the 2-0 margin, and five minutes later, Trizna added the second penalty kick to increase the lead to three. The Longwood forward would go on to complete her hat trick less than two minutes later, accounting for the 4-0 final margin.

Biddle stopped two shots for homestanding Longwood, while Redmond made five saves in 64 minutes of action for the Keydets. She was then relieved by Heidi Beemer, who stopped the game's final shot on goal in her first action of the young season. On the evening, VMI was whistled for 17 fouls to Longwood's three infractions.

VMI women's soccer will return to action Friday, as the Keydets travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on the Mount of Mount St. Mary's. The match is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
