Covington and Glasgow Named NABC All-District 3

LEXINGTON,  Va. - Virginia Military Institute senior forward/center D.J. Covington and senior guard Rodney Glasgow have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I District 3 squads. The NABC made the announcement Wednesday morning from its office in Kansas City, Missouri.

Covington was named District 3 first team while Glasgow earned a spot on the District 3 second team.

Covington and Glasgow are two of 252 student-athletes from around the nation honored among 25 districts and were two of five players chosen from the Big South Conference. VMI was the only Big South institution to have two student-athletes named to the District 3 squads. District 3 honorees are chosen from student-athletes who attend Big South Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference member institutions.

It marks the second consecutive year that VMI has had a recipient on the NABC District teams. Forward Stan Okoye '13 was a first team District 3 selection last year.

Covington has posted 17 double-double games in 2013-14 – the most in the league. In conference games, he led in rebounding (10.9), field goal percentage (.599), was second in blocks (3.38) and third in scoring  (20.7). He had 9 games with at least  20+ points and 10+ rebounds – the most in league - and was twice named BSC Player of the Week. Covington closed out the regular season with a career-high 33 points against Longwood which he also tallied against Campbell on February 19 at Cameron Hall. Covington also pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds against Longwood January 8.

Covington, the reigning Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, has 96 overall blocks on the year with five conference games with six blocks. He ranks second in the league in blocks in both league games (3.38) and overall games (3.10) and is ranked 11th nationally in blocks. Covington posted season-high seven-block games against Bridgewater and Bluefield State and averaged 3.0 blocks against three ACC teams. Covington is also VMI's all-time shot blocker with 262 rejections.

Glasgow leads the BSC in assists/turnover ratio ( 3.09) and free throw percentage (.887) and is ranked 2nd in league in assists (5.58), 5th in 3-pointers/game (2.42) and 7th in scoring (18.4), and 6th in FG percentage (.471). He converted 54 of 60 from the line in BSC games and produced 13 games of 20+ points including three 30+ games – among them 36 points against Radford and 35 against Asheville. Glasgow compiled 5 games of 10+ assists including 12 in the epic four-overtime win over Gardner-Webb February 5.

The District teams are selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC and the All-District recipients are eligible for the NABC Coaches' Division I All-America teams.

VMI is currently 19-12 and has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Tournament that begins next week. The CIT field will be announced Sunday, March 15.
